Quick Facts

Skill levelFinished sizeYarnHookTime
Beginner3 in / 7.5 cm tallDK cotton (Cat. 3)3.5 mm (US E/4)30 minutes

Materials You Will Need

  • DK weight 100% cotton yarn (Cat. 3): small amounts of White (approx. 5 grams / 12 metres), Bright Orange (approx. 8 grams / 20 metres), and Yellow (approx. 10 grams / 25 metres)
  • 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook
  • Toy stuffing (polyester fiberfill)
  • Black embroidery floss for the facial features
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker

Gauge

The first 2 rounds of the base measure approximately 2 cm across. Gauge is not critical for this project, but work your stitches tightly enough to prevent the toy stuffing from showing through.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = single crochet 2 in same stitch
  • dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rnd = round
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FO = fasten off

UK terms: sc = dc, hdc = htr, dc = tr.

Pattern Notes

  • The body is worked in continuous spiral rounds from the bottom up without joining. Do not turn at the end of rounds.
  • Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round.
  • The number in brackets at the end of each round indicates the exact stitch count for that round.

Assembly

No separate pieces need to be attached. All shaping and color blocking is built directly into the main body.

Finishing

Using black embroidery floss and a tapestry needle, embroider two small horizontal sleepy eyes or simple French knots on the orange section, about 3 stitches apart between rounds 14 and 15. Add a small smiling mouth just centered underneath the eyes. Hide all remaining yarn tails inside the body.

Tip: Working the color change rounds in the back loop only creates a clean, sharp boundary line between the yellow, orange, and white sections of your candy corn.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Keep your tension even throughout the color changes so the body shape remains symmetrical.
  • Do not overstuff the very tip of the white top, or it may round out instead of staying slightly pointed.
  • Make sure to anchor your embroidery thread securely on the inside before stitching the face.
  • Count your stitches at the end of each increase round to ensure the shape widens correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of DK?
Yes, you can use worsted weight yarn with a 4.0 mm hook, but your finished candy corn will turn out slightly larger than 3 inches tall.

Is this pattern safe for a baby or toddler under three years old?
For children under three, embroider all facial features using soft cotton yarn instead of plastic safety eyes or hard notions to ensure complete safety.

How do I get the point at the top of the candy corn to stay sharp?
Decrease evenly and firmly at the end, and avoid pushing too much stuffing into the final top rows.
