Fasten off, leave a 30 cm tail for weaving and securing.

Hat Ribbon – Purple, make 1

Rnd 1: ch 19, join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
Rnd 2: sc in each ch around (19)
Fasten off, leave a 20 cm tail for sewing.

Assembly

Slide the purple ribbon band over the lower section of the hat cone, positioning it just above the brim flare around Rnd 14. Secure it with neat whip stitches using the yarn tail. Using the yellow yarn scrap, embroider a tiny square buckle on the front center of the purple ribbon band using satin stitch.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining loose yarn ends securely inside the hollow of the hat. Attach a metal split ring securely through the very top tip of the hat cone if using it as a keychain.

Tip: Working the brim increase round in the front loops only creates a sharp, defined edge where the cone meets the wide circular brim.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Do not over-stuff the tip of the hat so it retains its natural slouchy curve.
  • Count your stitches at the end of every increase round to prevent wavy brims.
  • Use stitch markers in every round if you are new to continuous spirals.
  • Keep tension firm to prevent the fiberfill stuffing from peeking through the black stitches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of DK cotton?
Yes, you can substitute worsted weight yarn, but your finished witch hat will turn out slightly larger and you will need a larger hook size, such as a 3.5 mm or 4.0 mm.

How do I attach the keychain finding securely?
Pass the split ring or a sturdy loop of matching thread directly through the topmost stitches of the magic ring at the tip of the hat, reinforcing it with a few extra anchor stitches.

Is this pattern beginner-friendly?
Yes! It uses basic single crochet stitches, simple increases, and working in back and front loops to create shape.
