Bring a touch of woodland magic straight from the forest and into your arms with a handmade toy designed for cozy nursery snuggles. Crafted from rich cotton fibers with a stitched snout, secure safety eyes, and a delightfully fluffy tail, this sweet companion feels right at home nestled in a pair of loving hands.
This charming amigurumi softie is worked using basic single crochet stitches, finished to an overall height of approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm), and takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete from start to finish. It makes a wonderfully thoughtful, heirloom-quality handmade baby shower gift or nursery keepsake.
Sizing customization tips are included later in this post if you prefer a larger or smaller woodland companion.
What Makes This Woodland Friend Fox Softie Special
This softie achieves its authentic, premium look through thoughtful color blocking and seamless construction methods. By working primarily in continuous rounds of single crochet (amigurumi style), we avoid unsightly vertical seams. The signature look relies on precise color transitions from Burnt Orange to White and Charcoal, creating the fox’s classic facial markings and belly. The tail is sewn onto the body, while the embroidered snout and secure safety eyes give this little friend a gentle, soulful expression without sacrificing safety or structure.
Skill Level
- Intermediate (Amigurumi construction, color changes, basic embroidery)
- Working in continuous spirals (spiral rounds)
- Increasing and decreasing invisible single crochet (inv-dec)
- Basic surface embroidery and shaping
Don’t let the intermediate tag intimidate you—if you are comfortable managing basic amigurumi shaping and clean color transitions, you will find this project deeply rewarding.

| Color Order | Color Name | Approximate Yardage Needed |

| Color C | Charcoal Grey | 15 yards (14 meters) |
Yarn Suggestions
- Schachenmayr Catania: 100% mercerized cotton, 137 yards (125 meters) per 50g skein. Excellent stitch definition and holds up wonderfully to hugging.
- Knit Picks CotLin: 70% Tencel Lyocell, 30% Linen, 123 yards (112 meters) per 50g skein. Offers a lovely matte, organic texture ideal for modern nursery aesthetics.
- Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4: 100% cotton, 186 yards (170 meters) per 50g skein. A budget-friendly option with a vast color palette.
Note on yarn to avoid: Avoid novelty eyelash yarns or ultra-fuzzy mohair yarns. While they look fluffy, they obscure stitch visibility completely, making it nearly impossible to maintain consistent counts in amigurumi construction.
Gauge
- 24 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet using a US C/2 (2.75 mm) hook.
- Always check your gauge or test a small swatch. Maintaining a tight, even tension is essential to ensure the polyester stuffing does not poke through the stitches.
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- inc: single crochet 2 in the next stitch (increase)
- inv-dec: invisible single crochet decrease (insert hook into front loops of next 2 stitches, yarn over, pull through both loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops)
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sl st: slip stitch
- Rnd(s): Round(s)
- FO: fasten off
- [ ]: repeat instructions within brackets for the stated number of times
Special Stitches Explained
- Invisible Decrease (inv-dec): Essential for amigurumi. Insert your hook under the front loop only of the first stitch, then immediately insert your hook under the front loop only of the second stitch. (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. This prevents bumps and holes in your decreasing rows.
- Seamless Color Change: When changing colors at the end of a round, work the final pull-through of the last stitch of the old color using the new color. Proceed immediately with the next stitch in the new color.

- Sew the two ears to the top of the head at a slight angle between Rnds 23 and 26.
- Attach arms to the upper sides of the body just beneath the head seam. Attach legs to the lower base of the body so the softie can sit upright stably.
- Position the tail at the lower back of the body, angled upward, and sew securely around the perimeter.
- Using black embroidery floss, stitch a small inverted triangle nose over Rnds 1–3 and a gentle smiley mouth line below it. Weave in all remaining loose yarn ends.
Size Customization Tips
- To make a smaller softie: Use a Fingering weight (#1) cotton yarn and a smaller US B/1 (2.25 mm) crochet hook. This will reduce the final height by approximately 2 inches (5 cm).
- To make a larger softie: Switch to a DK or Worsted weight (#3 or #4) cotton yarn along with a US D/3 (3.25 mm) or US E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook. This will increase the final height to roughly 13 to 14 inches (33 to 35.5 cm)—be sure to increase your yardage estimates accordingly!
Care Instructions
Hand wash gently in cool water using a mild wool-safe detergent. Do not bleach. Press out excess moisture gently in a clean towel (do not wring or twist). Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry completely out of direct sunlight.
