Free Crochet Fair Isle Yoke Sweater Pattern: Snowflake Colorwork Made Easy

Quick Facts

Detailed sizing instructions and ease adjustments are included further down.

What Makes This Crochet Yoke Sweater Special

Working top-down means you start at the ribbed collar in Cream, transition straight into the yoke increases, and complete the stunning stranded snowflake chart in Navy and Cream before dividing for the sleeves. We use simple half double crochet worked in the standard loops for the main sweater and back loop only (BLO) for the ribbing, creating clean, stretchy edges. The colorwork uses tapestry crochet, carrying the unused yarn neatly inside your stitches so you get a smooth graphic finish without messy floats.

Skill Level

If you have never tried tapestry crochet before, don’t worry—the chart is repetitive, and the half double crochet stitches make it wonderfully straightforward.

Yarn Suggestions

⚠️ Note: Avoid heavy 100% cotton yarns for this project, as they lack elasticity and can make the yoke rigid and heavy to wear. Choose wool blends or acrylic yarns with good bounce.

Gauge

14 hdc x 11 rows = 4 in / 10 cm using a 5.0 mm hook.
Make a gauge swatch in half double crochet in the round to ensure your colorwork yoke fits properly.

Abbreviations

UK translation note: US hdc = UK htr, US sc = UK dc, US dc = UK tr.

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Tapestry Crochet (Carrying Yarn): When working colorwork rounds, lay the unused color(s) along the top of your stitches from the previous round. Work your current stitches over the floating yarn so it is completely enclosed inside the stitches. To change colors smoothly, complete the final yarn-over and pull-through of the last stitch of color A using color B.
  2. Hdc2tog: Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Insert hook into following st, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

FAQ

Can I substitute acrylic yarn for wool in this sweater?

Yes! Acrylic yarn works wonderfully and keeps the sweater lightweight and machine washable. Just choose a high-quality acrylic that has some natural bounce to prevent sagging.

How do I keep my colorwork floats from pulling too tight?

When carrying the unused yarn across the back of your work, make sure to stretch your active stitches out slightly every few stitches so the floating strand stays loose and elastic.

Can I adjust the neckline to be wider?

You can easily adjust the starting chain by adding or subtracting multiples of 4 chains to make the neckline wider or narrower before beginning your first round.
