Stepping out into the golden warmth of a sun-drenched afternoon feels effortless when wearing a garment that moves with the breeze. This airy, sleeveless design combines a clean square neckline with an open-work stitch pattern, making it the ultimate warm-weather staple for pairing with high-waisted linen trousers or casual denim.

Quick Facts

Sizing customization tips are included later in this guide to help you achieve your ideal bespoke fit.

What Makes This Breezy Linen Summer Crop Top Special

The beauty of this design lies in its minimalist construction and intentional textural contrast. Working from the bottom up, the garment begins with a crisp, structured ribbed hem crafted in alternating post stitches to anchor the silhouette securely at the waistline. Transitioning upward, the body shifts into a beginner-friendly double-crochet mesh that creates an airy, breathable fabric reminiscent of high-end resort wear. Wide shoulder straps frame a modern square neckline, striking the perfect balance between casual comfort and structural elegance. Because linen yarn softens beautifully with every wash and wear, this top only gets better the more you reach for it.

Skill Level

💡 Designer Tip: If you are new to working with 100% linen yarns, don’t worry if it feels slightly stiff while stitching; the natural plant fibers relax dramatically after their first gentle soak and block.

⚠️ Note: Avoid heavy 100% acrylic or wool yarns for this project. They trap heat and lack the crisp, draping qualities required for a breezy summer garment.

Gauge

⚠️ Note: Always make and block your gauge swatch before beginning. Linen yarns can behave unexpectedly after washing, so checking your tension saves time later!

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the indicated stitch from the row below, yarn over and pull up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice.
  2. Mesh Space (ch-1 sp): Worked by skipping 1 stitch and working 1 chain stitch over the skipped space, maintaining an open grid texture.

Pattern Instructions

Section 1: Ribbed Bottom Band

Working flat in rows for the band, which will be seamed at the side, or worked in joined rounds. We will work flat for stability.
Using US E/4 (3.5 mm) hook, ch 11.
Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (10 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, working in back loops only, 1 sc in first st, *1 fpdc around next st 2 rows below (or standard working loop adjustment for first rib row), 1 sc in next st; repeat from * across to last st, 1 sc in last st, turn. (10 sts)
Rows 3 to 72 (78, 86, 94, 102, 110):* Repeat Row 2 until band measures desired circumference. Join ends with a slip stitch seam to form a continuous loop. Rotate band to work along the top raw edge.

Section 2: Body Panel (Mesh Section)

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1 sp here and throughout), sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch-4. (72 [78, 86, 94, 102, 110] sts including ch-1 spaces)*

✅ Checkpoint: Count your total stitches and ch-1 spaces. Ensure the number is even and divisible by 2 to keep the mesh pattern symmetrical.

Rounds 2 to 24 (25, 26, 28, 29, 30): Ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp, *dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch-4. (72 [78, 86, 94, 102, 110] sts)*

Section 3: Dividing for Front and Back Panels

Work across half the total stitches for the Front Panel, leaving the remaining stitches for the Back Panel. Fasten off and reattach yarn at the designated marker for the front square neckline.

Front Panel Upper Shaping:
Row 1: Attach yarn 4 mesh blocks in from the right side for the square neckline inset. Ch 4, [dc in next dc, ch 1] across the center 10 (12, 12, 14, 14, 16) mesh blocks, turn, leaving remaining side stitches unworked for armhole cutouts. (20 [24, 24, 28, 28, 32] sts)
Rows 2 to 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6): Repeat mesh row pattern. Fasten off.

Repeat the same process for the Back Panel.

Section 4: Shoulder Straps & Assembly

Lay front and back panels with RS facing. Join yarn at top corner of Back Panel.
Row 1: Ch 1, work sc evenly across top 3 mesh blocks of the shoulder. Ch 1, turn, sc across. Repeat for 6 rows to form strap. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Whipstitch strap edge to the matching Front Panel corner. Repeat for second shoulder strap.

💡 Designer Tip: Pin your straps to the front panel before seaming to test the neckline depth on your body and ensure a comfortable fit.

Weave in all remaining loose ends securely using your tapestry needle. Give the completed garment a gentle hand wash in lukewarm water with mild soap, press out excess water in a towel, and lay flat to block to final measurements.
