What Makes This Pumpkin Napkin Ring Special

The band is worked in rows of back loop only single crochet, creating a stretchy, ribbed fabric that wraps snugly around rolled napkins. The tiny pumpkin is built in continuous rounds with a stuffed puffy body and simple surface shaping, finished off with a quick textured stem and a flat leaf tucked to the side.

Pattern Instructions

Pattern Notes

Section 1: Napkin Ring Band (Mustard, Cream, or Rust)

Row 1: Ch 8, working in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (7 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, working in BLO, sc in each st across, turn (7 sc)
Rows 3 to 26: Rep Row 2 (7 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail. Bring the two short ends together and seam them using the yarn tail to form a ring. Turn the ring inside out so the seam sits on the inside.

✅ Checkpoint: You should have a sturdy, ribbed fabric band measuring about 5 inches long when laid flat.

Section 2: Pumpkin (Rust or Mustard, make 1 per ring)

Rnd 1: With main pumpkin color and working in a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Do not join; work in a spiral (6 sc)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18 sc)
Rnds 4 to 6: Sc in each st around (18 sc)
Rnd 7: (1 sc, inv-dec) x 6 (12 sc)
Stuff the pumpkin lightly with fiberfill.
Rnd 8: Inv-dec x 6 (6 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a long 12-inch (30 cm) tail for shaping and assembly. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle, weave through the front loops of Rnd 8, and pull tight to close.

Shaping the Pumpkin Segments:
Thread your yarn tail and bring the needle from the bottom center hole up through the top center. Pull the yarn firmly around the outside of the pumpkin to create the first indentation (rib). Insert the needle down through the bottom center and up through the top again, spacing the indents evenly to create 6 distinct vertical sections. Secure and weave in ends securely inside the pumpkin.

Section 3: Stem (Dark Brown)

Row 1: Join Dark Brown yarn to the top center of the pumpkin with a sl st, ch 3, working in the 2nd ch from hook, 2 sl st down the chain.
Fasten off, leaving a short tail to weave into the top of the pumpkin.

Section 4: Leaf (Olive Green)

Row 1: Ch 5, working in 2nd ch from hook, sl st, hdc, dc, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in last ch. Working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, dc, hdc, sl st. Join with a sl st to the first st (8 sts + ch-2 space)
Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail for sewing.

Assembly and Finishing

  1. Position the Olive Green leaf at the base of the Brown stem on top of the pumpkin, and sew it down securely.
  2. Center the finished pumpkin on the outer surface of the napkin ring band. Using the remaining yarn tails from the pumpkin, stitch the base of the pumpkin firmly to the ribbed band.
  3. Weave in all loose ends securely on the inside of the band. Repeat for as many napkin rings as needed for your table.

FAQ

Can I use acrylic yarn instead of cotton?

Cotton is strongly recommended because it holds its shape firmly, does not stretch out over time, and handles table use much better than fuzzy acrylics.

How do I adjust the size of the napkin ring band?

Simply add or subtract rows in the band section before seaming the ends together. Each row adds about 0.2 inches in circumference.

Are these safe for young children at the dinner table?

Yes, these napkin rings contain no wire, plastic, or small safety eyes, making them entirely soft and safe for family dinners.
