What Makes This Acorn Keychain Special

Working the nut in continuous single crochet rounds creates a smooth, tight fabric that keeps the stuffing securely inside. The textured cap uses front loops and short stitches to mimic the bumpy texture of a real acorn cap, while a sturdy chain loop securely attaches the metal keyring.

Skill Level

If you know how to make a single crochet and work in rounds, you are ready to stitch these charms!

Gauge

Abbreviations

UK terms equivalent: sc = dc, hdc = htr, dc = tr.

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around your left index finger to form a loop. Insert hook into loop, yarn over, draw up a loop, and work the starting stitches into the ring. Pull the tail to close.
  2. Invisible Decrease (dec): Insert hook into the front loop of the first stitch, then immediately into the front loop of the next stitch. Yarn over and pull through both front loops, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Pattern Notes: Work the nut and cap in continuous spirals without joining rounds unless stated. Use a stitch marker to track the first stitch of each round. Stuff the nut firmly before beginning the decrease rounds on the cap.

Section 1: Acorn Nut (Gold/Tan, make 1)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sc)
Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18 sc)
Rnds 4 to 8: sc in each st around (18 sc)
Rnd 9: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12 sc)

✅ Checkpoint: Stuff the nut firmly with polyester fiberfill now before the opening gets too small.

Rnd 10: dec x 6 (6 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail. Thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight to close the top of the nut. Weave in the starting tail.

Section 2: Acorn Cap and Stem (Dark Brown, make 1)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sc)
Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: working in BLO, (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18 sc)
Rnds 4 to 5: sc in each st around (18 sc)
Rnd 6: dec x 3, sc in next 12 sts (15 sc)
Do not fasten off. Now work the stem loop: ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch back to the base of the cap. Sl st into the base st to secure. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) sewing tail.

Assembly

  1. Place the Dark Brown cap over the top of the Gold/Tan nut, aligning the BLO ridge of the cap with Rnd 3 of the nut.
  2. Using the 10-inch tail from the cap, whipstitch the cap securely to the upper body of the nut around Rnds 6–7 of the nut. Securely anchor the base of the stem loop.
  3. Thread the chain of your keyring through the base of the stem loop and secure it tightly.

Size Customization Tips

Care Instructions

Spot clean gently with a damp cloth and mild soap. Air dry flat. Do not machine wash or submerge keyrings in water.

FAQ

Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of sport weight?

Yes, but your finished acorn will be slightly larger (about 2.5 inches tall). Just increase your hook size to 3.5 mm or 4.0 mm to keep the stitches tight enough to hold the stuffing.

How do I attach the keychain securely so it doesn’t pull off?

When sewing the cap to the nut, pass your tapestry needle through the keyring chain links or the stem loop multiple times to anchor the hardware firmly to the crochet fabric.

Are these safe for babies and toddlers?

If giving this charm to a child under 3, remove the metal keyring and keychain hardware entirely, and embroider the details instead of using small metal parts.
