What Makes This Boho Wall Decor Crochet Special

This dreamcatcher features a traditional mandala worked in joined rounds from the center out, creating open chain-space spokes that radiate outward. Once crocheted, the lace circle is stretched firmly inside a smooth wooden embroidery hoop so the intricate geometry opens up. Long tails decorated with smooth wooden beads and soft feathers add a lovely bohemian movement.

Skill Level

You will do great if you are comfortable following joined round instructions and handling lightweight cotton yarn!

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around your index finger twice to form a loop, insert hook under both strands, pull up a loop, and ch 1 to secure.
  2. Puff Stitch (puff): [Yo, insert hook into st/ch-space, pull up a long loop] 4 times in the same st/ch-space (9 loops on hook), yo, draw through all 9 loops on hook, ch 1 to close.
  3. Joining to Hoop: Place the completed mandala inside the wooden hoop. Attach yarn to the hoop with a sl st, then work sc stitches around both the outer ch-space of the mandala and the wooden hoop simultaneously to stretch it evenly.

Assembly

  1. Hooping the Mandalas: Take the 10-inch wooden hoop. Center the large mandala inside it. Using matching cotton yarn, join with a sl st around the hoop and through the outer ch-5 loops of Rnd 7, spacing them evenly so the mandala is pulled taut and centered without distorting the symmetry. Tie off and weave in ends. Repeat this process for the small mandala inside the 6-inch wooden hoop.
  2. Hanging Loops: Attach a 10-inch length of yarn to the top center of each hoop, knot securely, and form a hanging loop.
  3. Fringe and Tails: Cut 6 strands of yarn each measuring 16 inches (40 cm). Attach 3 hanging strands to the bottom of the large hoop, and 3 strands to the bottom of the small hoop using larks head knots. Thread wooden beads onto the hanging strands, securing each bead with a small overhand knot underneath to hold it in place. Glue or knot a feather to the bottom end of each hanging tail.

Finishing

Trim all yarn tails, weave in any remaining loose ends securely, and gently steam block the hanging feathers if needed so they lie flat.

Size Customization Tips

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or feather duster. Do not machine wash or submerge in water due to the wooden hoops and natural feathers.

FAQ

Can I use acrylic yarn instead of cotton?

Cotton is strongly recommended because it has zero stretch. Acrylic yarn will stretch over time under tension inside the wooden hoop, causing the mandala to sag.

How do I secure the feathers so they don’t fall out?

Insert the stem of each feather into the center of the bottom overhand knot on your hanging tail, pull tight, and add a tiny drop of clear craft glue inside the knot for extra security.

Are these dreamcatchers suitable for a baby nursery?

Yes, they make gorgeous nursery decor. For safety, hang them securely out of reach of cribs and small children so the hanging beads and cords cannot be pulled down.
