Raised bobble hearts make this baby blanket special, and they are easier than they look. The centre panel has rows of hearts built from bobbles on a calm seed stitch background, framed by a simple dusty rose border. Soft ivory cotton is gentle on baby skin and washes well.

Quick Facts

What Makes This Bobble Heart Blanket Special

The texture of this blanket is what sets it apart. The main body uses a seed stitch background, which creates a dense, beautiful fabric that doesn’t have large gaps—perfect for keeping tiny toes warm. Set against this neat textured background are raised bobble hearts, created by grouping 5 double crochets together on the wrong side of the work so they pop out crisply on the right side. The entire piece is finished off cleanly with a straightforward dusty rose single crochet border that pulls the soft ivory tones together.

⚠️ Note: Avoid novelty furry yarns or very fuzzy acrylics for this project, as they will obscure the bobble heart texture and shed fibers that are unsuitable for a baby’s sensitive skin. Stick to smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarns.

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Bobble Stitch (5-dc bobble): [Yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops] 5 times in the same stitch, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook. The bobble will naturally push to the opposite side of the fabric (work bobbles on WS rows so they pop on the RS).
  2. Seed Stitch: Created by working 1 sc into the ch-1 space of the previous row, and 1 ch while skipping the sc stitch of the previous row.

Pattern Instructions

Section 1: Main Blanket Panel (Color A: Ivory)

The main panel is worked flat in rows using a seed stitch background with charted bobble hearts.

Foundation: With Color A and 5.0 mm hook, ch 121.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across, turn. *(120 sts: 60 sc, 60 ch-sps)*
Rows 2 to 6: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across ending with sc in last sc, turn. *(120 sts)*
Row 7 (WS – First Heart Row): Follow your heart chart placement. Work seed stitch background across, inserting bobbles into designated stitches where heart motifs begin. (Refer to the provided heart chart for exact bobble placement: typically working 1 bobble, expanding to 3, 5, 7, and tapering back down over 15 rows per heart).
Rows 8 to 140: Continue working in established seed stitch pattern, repeating the 3 vertical heart motifs spaced evenly across the blanket width as shown in the chart photos. After completing the final heart rows, work 6 plain seed stitch rows. Fasten off Color A.

✅ Checkpoint: Measure your blanket width; it should measure approximately 72 cm across before adding the border.

Section 2: Border (Color B: Dusty Rose)

Rnd 1: Join Color B with a sl st in any corner stitch. Ch 1, work 3 sc in the same corner st to turn smoothly, then work 120 sc evenly down the side row-ends, 3 sc in next corner, 120 sc across foundation chain, 3 sc in next corner, 120 sc evenly up the final side row-ends, 3 sc in final corner, join with sl st to first sc. (492 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, working in each sc around and placing 3 sc in the middle stitch of each 3-sc corner cluster. Join with sl st to first sc. (500 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, working in each sc around and placing 3 sc in the middle stitch of each 3-sc corner cluster. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off Color B. (508 sc)

Assembly & Finishing

Size Customization Tips

To make the blanket wider, add extra chains in multiples of 12 plus the outer border spacing. Each full heart motif column requires a repeat block of stitches. To make it longer, simply add more rows of seed stitch between the heart rows or add extra rows at the top and bottom before starting the border.

Care Instructions

Machine wash gentle in cold water with mild detergent. Do not bleach. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat in shade to dry completely. Cotton yarn softens beautifully with every wash.

FAQ

Can I use acrylic yarn instead of cotton?

Yes, you can use a medium-weight acrylic yarn if you prefer, but 100% cotton gives the bobbles a firmer, more defined structure that holds its shape better over time.

How do I adjust the blanket to make a smaller baby security blanket?

You can reduce the number of heart columns from three down to one, and decrease your foundation chain accordingly for a snug security blanket size.

Are bobbles safe for baby blankets?

Yes! When crocheted securely as a 5-dc bobble tightly integrated into the fabric stitches, they are completely safe and won’t detach like sewn-on buttons or plastic embellishments.
