What Makes This Bookworm Bookmark Special

This bookmark combines a clever mix of amigurumi and flat crochet techniques. The head is worked in continuous spiral rounds and lightly stuffed to give it a charming 3D shape, complete with cute embroidered glasses. The body transitions seamlessly from the head into a flat, textured strip that lies completely flush inside a book without damaging the spine or pages. A bright bobble tail adds a playful pop of color at the bottom, and the entire piece works up in less than an hour.

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around your index finger twice to create a ring, work the required number of sc into the ring, and pull the tail to close securely.
  2. Invisible Decrease (dec): Insert hook into the front loop only of the next two stitches, yarn over, pull through both front loops, yarn over, and pull through remaining two loops on hook.
  3. 5-dc Bobble (bobble): Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook). Repeat this 4 more times in the same stitch until you have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on your hook.

Pattern Instructions

💡 Designer Tip: Use a stitch marker at the start of every round when working on the head so you never lose your place.

Section 1: Head (Sage Green, make 1)

Working in continuous spiral rounds without joining.
– Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sc)
– Rnd 2: [inc] x 6 (12 sc)
– Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18 sc)
– Rnds 4 to 7: sc in each st around (18 sc)
– Rnd 8: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12 sc)

✅ Checkpoint: Stuff the head firmly with polyester fiberfill now before the opening gets too small.
– Rnd 9: [dec] x 6 (6 sc)
– FO, leaving a short tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight to close the bottom of the head completely.

Section 2: Body (Sage Green, make 1)

Working in turned flat rows directly from the base of the head.
– Row 1: Join Sage Green yarn with a sl st at the bottom center base of the head, ch 1, work 5 sc evenly across the bottom edge of the head, turn (5 sc)
– Rows 2 to 46: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (5 sc)
(Note: Continue repeating Row 2 until the body strip measures approximately 7.5 inches / 19 cm long, or your desired bookmark length).

Section 3: Tail Bobble (Burgundy, make 1)

Worked directly onto the final row of the body.
– Row 1 (Bobble row): With Burgundy yarn attached at the end of the last body row, ch 3 (does not count as st), work 1 bobble stitch in the first st, sl st in the same st to anchor, ch 1, FO and weave in all yarn ends securely (1 bobble)

Assembly & Embroidery

  1. Glasses: Thread your tapestry needle with Dark Brown yarn. Position the glasses centered on the front of the head between Rnds 3 and 6. Embroider two small circles (about 2 stitches wide each) for the frames using backstitch, and connect them across the bridge of the nose with a straight stitch. Add short lines extending out to the sides for the temples. Weave in ends neatly inside the head.
  2. Eyes: Using a small strand of Dark Brown yarn, embroider two tiny French knots or small vertical stitches inside the center of each glasses frame for the eyes.

Size Customization Tips

Care Instructions

Hand wash gently in cool water using mild detergent. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel. Do not bleach, tumble dry, or iron directly over the embroidered glasses.

FAQ

Can I use acrylic yarn instead of cotton?

You can, but cotton is strongly recommended because it produces a crisp, flat finish that slides easily between book pages without adding unwanted bulk.

How can I make this safe for a young child’s book gift?

If giving this to a toddler or young child, embroider the glasses and eyes using soft yarn instead of adding any plastic safety elements, and secure all yarn tails tightly.

Can I attach a different animal’s head to this body?

Yes! The flat body strip works wonderfully as a universal bookmark base. You can attach a cat, bear, or frog head using the same basic 18-stitch ball shaping method.
